Angel Reese Becomes Second-Youngest Player with a WNBA Triple-Double

  • Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky is in her second season, leading the WNBA in rebounds as a rookie, making the All-Star and All-Rookie teams.
  • Much is made about a rivalry with Indiana’s Caitlin Clark, who had two triple-doubles last year, also as a rookie.
  • Reese joined Clark in esteemed company, becoming the second-youngest player to record a triple-double in Chicago’s 78-66 win over Connecticut.

The Chicago Sky are off to a slow start in the 2025 WNBA season, posting a 3-7 record in their first 10 games. Only Connecticut have a worst points per game differential, and the Sky are struggling at both ends of the court.

Angel Reese has been a polarizing figure for the Sky, both on and off the court. But Reese put her name in the history books on Sunday. She became the second-youngest player in WNBA history to record a triple-double in a win over the Sun.

Reese Notches 11 Points, 13 Rebounds, 11 Assists in Win

Reese posted the line to lead the Sky to a 78-66 win on the road in Connecticut on Sunday.

The former LSU star played 36 minutes for the Sky, posting 11 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists, along with three steals and a pair of blocks. After leading the league in rebounds as a rookie, Reese continues to be a menace on the glass, pacing the WNBA with 11.9 boards. For the season, Reese is averaging 10.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.7 steals.

Reese entered the WNBA with a lot of fanfare, and much of it was due to a rivalry with Indiana’s Caitlin Clark. The two met twice in college as Reese’s LSU Tigers beat Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes 102-85 in the 2023 national-title game.

Clark got a measure of revenge in 2024 as the Hawkeyes downed the Tigers 94-87 in the Elite 8. The rivalry continued in the WNBA, where Clark and Reese helped spark the league to record viewership. There were even Caitlin Clark vs. Angel Reese betting props for a hypothetical 1-v-1 game.

Both players have downplayed the rivalry, but they’re always going to be mentioned in the same breath, whether it’s negative or positive. Reese became the second-youngest player in WNBA history to notch a triple-double at 23 years and 40 days. Clark did it twice last season, first at 22 years and 166 days, and again, 60 days later.

Can the Chicago Sky Turn Their Season Around?

The Sky are far down the WNBA championship odds at online sportsbooks, and it was always going to be a tough season. Chicago fired head coach Theresa Witherspoon in September 2024 and replaced her with Tyler Marsh.

They brought in Ariel Atkins from Washington, and Rebecca Allen from Connecticut. Courtney Vandersloot returned to Chicago, where she spent the first 12 seasons of her career. Vandersloot won the 2024 title with New York, then became Chicago’s all-time leading scorer earlier this season, passing her wife, Allie Quigley. The veteran guard then tore her ACL and will miss the rest of the campaign.

The onus is on Reese and fellow young player Kamila Cardoso to improve and push the Sky forward. Reese still has to improve offensively, shooting 35.7% from the field, and 71.1% from the flour line.

She hits the boards hard and is an outstanding defensive player, but you can’t be impactful enough if you struggle on the other end. Still, she’s only 23 and a hard worker, so the future is bright for the young forward!
